I have just finished watching Evolution. My immediate opinion – it is one of the most entertaining films in a long, long time. I was only drawn to the film due to the fact that Mulder was starring in it, but its science nerd comedy styles kept me gripped from start to finish.
The storyline basically begins with a meteor crashing on Earth. From it life forms spring up quickly involving due to the fact that they have ten base pairs (all life on Earth has four, including humans) and soon it is taking over. The operation then goes from a scientific to a military one as they prepare to napalm the aliens before they evolve further and kills us all.
I don’t want to take it any further to spoil the movie but think about the ending of Mars Attack and you should be able to work out the basics of the end. To add a few side notes, that weird smiley face thing was only actually used at the end of the movie and they even threw in a spoof commercial, nice touches.
Back to the movie itself though, the reason I found it so entertaining was because it really got me routing for the good guys like I haven’t found myself doing in a long time. The screaming for them to win really takes me back, it’s something I can’t recall having done in years.
It also has some very funny moments especially towards the end. Too many comedies these days fail to get me laughing out loud but despite the fact I came at the movie from a serious point of very I was cracking up regularly.
David Duchovny (X-Files, Kalifornia) and Julianne Moore (Hannibal, Jurassic Park Lost World) lead the cast though Orlando Jones (Magnolia) and Seann William Scott (Stiffler from American Pie, Road Trip) also play a large part in the movie adding much of the comedy as well.
Of course it is a classic under dogs win scenario with a happy ending, if the situation happened in reality the aliens would soon out evolve us and soon just basically kill us all and make humanity extinct. Best not to consider what would happen in real life though.
Evolution never seemed too great acclaim or wide spread popularity – I fail to see why. A lot of critics said the directing was terrible and the story should never have been considered. Ignore them all; Evolution is the science fiction comedy of the decade.
