The acting of talents of Ryan Phillipe are under appreciated in my opinion. Not that they are not as many people consider him a good actor. But he has done some fantastic films, Cruel Intentions being one. And today’s feature, Antitrust being another.
The film centres around Milo Hoffman who is working on some open source projects which they are planning to distribute. Meanwhile, Nerv, run by entrepreneur Gary Winston is fighting several Antitrust lawsuits for trying to run the competition into the ground as they work on a system to unite all devices in the world – Synapse.
There is a lot of competition to do it, but Milo and his friends think they can do it – thanks to the management spying on all the best coders on the world and when one of them makes a breakthrough, they kill them and steal the code. It’s a nice system, until Milo starts to get onto the system. But there are challenges yet – his long time girlfriend and new found friend at work as on the Nerv payroll too.
Even though the script makes reference to Microsoft as another organisation, I think it’s pretty obvious its making digs at the company. For those not to familiar with the face of Bill Gates, Gary Winston could be mistaken for him.
The end of the movie is what would be considered a happy one – Milo triumphs over Nerv and Gary is arrested. The movie raises some good issues though – if you make your software open source, less moral people could make money out of it whereas keeping hold of it allows you to see profits put to good courses.
The film offers some good twists although I apologise if I ruined them already in the review ;). For all nerds, it is still worth a watch though it is a story that could well be true and yet is still a good movie as a piece of fiction.
