Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith

22 May 2005 08:59 am

It’s here! The film that will put most of the puzzle pieces together! I say most because everyone is saying that the films are now complete – they aren't, you are all missing episodes 7, 8 and 9 which will come and have always been planned to come and it really annoys me when they get ignored!

Still this is like the third article I have had that rant in, so I am just going to get on with the review now. Episode III is the filler in movie – the transition from the first few episodes centring around The Republic to how the Empire begins and Darth Vader rises.

It does a great job of it. Not only does it fill you in with the whole Star Wars storyline thing but it is also a kick-ass film. Forget your hatred of episodes one and two (that said, lots of people actually liked them, just not as much as the originals), this is the Star Wars movie you have been waiting for.

The storyline opens with a massive battle above Curuscant, where that pesky drone army led by General Grievous and Count Dooku have kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine or that's the official story anyway. Luckily two nice Jedis named Obi Wan and Anakin are on hand to mount a rescue.

The backdrop is that there is a huge war going on between The Republic who have the Jedi and the clone army battling away against the separatist leaders who are in control of all the droid armies (they are basically the Trade Confederation with a more war like name ;).

Anakin is haunted though – he has visions of Padme dieing in child birth (by the way Anakin knocked her up) and there is only one way to save her – to unleash the power of the dark side to prevent death. I'm going to stop now before I get hate mail for ruining the plot ;).

The film isn't perfect – there are a few valid points that have been made such as there is light sabrebattle after lightsabre battle. That said, it's broken up and there is plenty of other stuff happening too. It's reasonably fast paced so you won’t get bored. I find myself checking my watch at certain points on almost every film (I think it's a psychological problem ;) but not this one.

Before the film came out, George Lucas described it as “Titanic in space.” I would tend to agree with him. But with Titanic it was three hours of solid emo. Here it's subtle, those attending to see many innocent people get slaughtered will get their kicks from the fight scenes whereas those who want to see the emo will get their fair share of it too.

The most important thing is, I think the film is at least well on its way to recapturing the magic of Star Wars. It is perhaps without the dry wit that the partnership of Hans and Princess Leia brought to the originals but is definitely a Star Wars film and definitely worth going to see.
