Ok, I know that in the United States it is known as American Wedding. But that is your problem; the movie is named American Pie 3, and American Pie: The Wedding is just about acceptable, but American Wedding is just going too far and I am not going to accept it.
It’s good to know that American Pie made it to a trilogy. I mean American Pie is like the defining teen comedy movie and it’s comforting that it has been so successful. That said, this film wasn’t exactly what I was expecting.
The movie features most of the regular cast. You have Jason Biggs as Jim, the gorgeous Alyson Hannigan as Michelle, Eugene Levy as Jim’s dad and of course, how could you do a Pie movie without Seann William Scott as Stifler?
That said, where the hell is Oz? I mean ok you might not be able to get the actor in some circumstances (though they almost always do, do sequels) but even if you can’t get them you don’t just totally ignore the character and pretend they were never there.
The plot takes place thee years after the second movie with everyone having graduated from college and Jim proposes to Michelle who of course says yes or it would be a pretty short movie. After this the plot goes through the twists and turns of preparing for the wedding.
Of course there is no such thing as subtly and the entire jokes list is just a series of slap stick crude jokes but that is what a teen comedy is generally and if you go to the cinema expecting something else you really need to re-think your choice of movies. What is important is how good these jokes are.
There is a difference between crude funny jokes and things that are just sick though. I’m not going to spoil it for you but when you see a dark cupboard type joke heading your way either run off to buy more popcorn or if at home just mute the TV and close your eyes for a minute or two.
The main problem I have with this movie though it that it doesn’t feel like a Pie movie. The first movie was a great comedy about the time before prom, the second movie was a summer by the lake and this just isn’t that. It’s not a bunch of high school guys having the time of their lives. Jim is getting married, Finch is pining for Stifler’s mum and Kevin just isn’t doing much.
Stifler’s bigger part than he has had in previous movies doesn’t do anything either, they are forced to flesh out a character that would essentially be flat in real life. It first turns him from a cool yet annoying guy to a total asshole and then turns him into the guy who turns and saves the day, it just messes up his entire character. Also the whole thing about him dancing did nothing but damage to his character either.
I came into this movie with an open mind that this was a teen comedy and that it shouldn’t be criticised for being that. But to be honest it doesn’t make a great one of those. It tries it’s best but it has nothing on the original two movies, disappointing.
